Dr. Whitley is the President and founder of The Vascular Institute of Birmingham.  He began his medical training in general surgery at Georgetown University and later developed a keen interest in the area of vascular surgery.  He completed vascular surgery fellowships at The Mayo Clinic and Harvard Medical School.  Dr. Whitley then went on staff at Brown University where he was the director of the ultrasound laboratory.  Later, he joined the staff at The University of Alabama at Birmingham.  

In 2003, Dr. Whitley decided to make a move to St. Vincent’s where he has been in the exclusive practice of vascular surgery.  He has received many honors and is a member of numerous prestigious surgical societies.  He holds board certification in vascular surgery and general surgery from the American Board of Surgery.  He is the author of more than 70 papers and book chapters on vascular surgery.   He has been the invited lecturer at numerous meetings throughout the United States and Europe.  He has over 25 years of experience treating venous disorders.
